Debuchy returns Lille to the win column

Soccer Betting Lines

02/18/2012 - Lorient, France (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Lille brought an end to its poor run of results on Saturday as Mathieu Debuchy's goal in the 76th minute gave the club a 1-0 win at Lorient.

A 5-4 defeat to Bordeaux last time out left Lille with just one win from its last five games and saw the defending champions slip further off the pace at the top of the league.

But Saturday's win moves the club to within eight points of leaders PSG, which will face second-place Montpellier on Sunday.

Both goalkeepers were sharp in the first half and needed to be to keep the match scoreless.

However, Lille began to take control after the break and netted the only goal of the contest inside the final 15 minutes when Benoit Pedretti played Debuchy in on goal and he finished off the play by smashing his shot off the right post and into the net.

Lorient's attack never got going after halftime and the club's winless streak has now reached eight games.

Marseille 1, Valenciennes 1

Marseille, France - Marseille extended its unbeaten streak to nine games on Saturday, but failed to significantly close the gap on the top two teams as the club was held to a 1-1 draw by Valenciennes.

Alou Diarra put Marseille in front after 15 minutes with a headed goal from Rod Fanni's cross, but Gil canceled out the opener early in the second half when he pounced on a loose ball near the six-yard box following a corner kick to fire home his first goal of the season.

Marseille moves into fourth with the result but is 11 points back of leaders PSG, while Valenciennes has claimed seven points from its last three games to sit six points above the drop zone.

Ajaccio 0, Brest 0

Ajaccio, France - Ajaccio failed to pull away from the relegation zone on Saturday as Eduaro's failed penalty kick in the 84th minute forced the team to settle for a 0-0 home draw with Brest.

The game entered the final 10 minutes without a goal, but Ajaccio appeared poised to take the lead when Brest's Benoit Lesoimier was whistled for handling the ball inside his own penalty area.

However, Eduardo sent his spot kick straight at goalkeeper Steeve Elana, keeping Ajaccio just two points above the relegation zone.

Caen 2, Evian 2

Caen, France - Sidney Govou's stoppage-time equalizer helped Evian salvage a 2-2 draw at Caen on Saturday in a battle of bottom-half teams.

A penalty kick from Pierre-Alain Frau just before the break put Caen into the lead, only for Cedric Barbosa to equalize five minutes after halftime for Evian.

Livio Nabab restored the home side's lead with a low shot that slipped underneath goalkeeper Stephan Andersen, but just when Caen thought it had claimed a second successive win, a corner kick found its way onto the right foot of Govou, who fired a volley into the net to grab his team a point.

Dijon 3, Nice 0

Dijon, France - Dijon put some distance between itself and the relegation places on Saturday after securing a 3-0 home win over second-from-the-bottom Nice.

The visitors entered the match on a five-game winless streak and went behind shortly before the break when Gael Kakuta played a one-two with Brice Jovial and slotted the return pass home.

Kakuta played provider on the second goal, which arrived in the 53rd minute when he picked out Jovial, who lobbed goalkeeper David Ospina to double the lead.

Koro Issa Kone put the finishing touches on the win in the final five minutes with another lobbed shot that sailed over the head of Ospina.

Toulouse 3, Nancy 0

Nancy, France - Toulouse moved into seventh place after claiming a comfortable 3-0 victory at Nancy on Saturday.

The visitors took charge from the start by scoring twice inside the opening 20 minutes with Francois Sirieix scoring his first goal of the season in the ninth minute before helping set up a goal for Adrien Regattin 10 minutes later.

Toulouse had lost three of its last four games but put the result out of reach in the 72nd minute when Regattin's volley was saved by goalkeeper Guy Ndy Assembe, only for Emmanuel Riviere to score on the rebound.

Sochaux 0, Auxerre 0

Montbeliard, France - The bottom two sides in Ligue 1 played to a 0-0 draw at the Stade Bonal on Saturday as Sochaux and Auxerre each claimed a point.

Auxerre goalkeeper Olivier Sorin was the busier of the two netminders and he did well, especially in the second half, to help his team to a point.

Cedric Bakambu tested Sorin with a shot in the 50th minute before the 'keeper made stops on Ryad Boudebouz and finally Marvin Martin, whose volley needed a nice stop from Sorin to preserve the point.

The result helps the survival chances of both sides just a bit, but it also extends winless skids for both with Sochaux's reaching 10 games while Auxerre hasn't won in six contests.

The San Francisco 49ers (5-11 SU, 5-10-1 ATS in 2007; 1-1 SU & ATS in pre-season) found some offensive life last week, and they will try to build some momentum on Thursday night as they travel to the Windy City to take on the Chicago Bears (7-9 SU & ATS in 2007; 0-2 SU, 0-1-1 ATS in pre-season) in an NFL matchup that is set to get underway at 8 PM ET at Soldier Field (natural turf) in Chicago.

Thursday, August 21

NFL betting odds: CHICAGO -3 (-120), Total 37

NOTABLE STAT: San Francisco was last in points, last in total offense in 2007
KEY NFL BETTING TREND: SF has lost its last seven SU on pre-season road

In the BetUS NFL pre-season football betting odds, the Bears are listed as a three-point favorite (laying -120), with the total posted at 37 points.

Here are some NFL football betting trends as they relate to this matchup (reflecting numbers going into the 2008 season):

* SF has lost 11 of its last 14 games SU
* SF has covered three of its last 11 games
* SF has lost six of its last seven road games SU
* SF has covered one of its last seven road games
* CHI has covered five of its last eight games
* CHI has played five of its last seven games OVER the total
* CHI has covered four of its last 13 home games
* SF has lost its last seven pre-season road games SU
* CHI has covered two of its last seven home pre-season games

Well, I guess we should congratulate the Bears on making their quarterback choice for the season's opening game, as they have designated Kyle Orton the starter against Indianapolis. The Bears obviously have lost patience with Rex Grossman, and what they do with him at this point is anybody's guess. But suffice it to say that there isn't a quarterback competition anymore, at least in training camp.

Meanwhile, the quarterback competition may also be settled in San Francisco, where the Niners bounced back from a lackluster 18-6 loss to the Raiders, in which they turned the ball over four times, to execute a 34-6 rout of the Packers last Saturday. However, coach Mike Nolan has stopped short of saying that, insisting that the job is still open. But J.T. O'Sullivan, the longshot of the trio of Niner signal-callers who opened camp, will start his third straight pre-season game here. Against Green Bay, O'Sullivan was only 8-for-17, and was intercepted, but he also threw for 9.1 yards an attempt, which included a 59-yard TD pass to Josh Morgan. The others struggled.

Some offensive cohesion is badly needed, in light of the Niners' dismal 2007 campaign, in which they were dead last in the NFL in scoring, with just 13.7 points a game. And O'Sullivan is the guy who is most familiar with offensive coordinator Mike Martz's exacting system, because he learned it last year in Detroit. O'Sullivan will go at least the entire first half and may even last longer. He'll be relieved by Alex Smith, with Shawn Hill doing the mop-up work. Three receivers who were out last week - Bryant Johnson, Ashley Lelie and Arnaz Battle - will miss this game too.

That may hurt a little here, especially since the Bears will be using a lot of their defensive starters. And it's the defense that has been keeping the Bears in games thus far. In fact, the defense and special teams were responsible for the first 19 points Chicago scored against Seattle last time out, as the offense really struggled with Grossman at the controls. But maybe the first-team offense has a chance to settle a little bit as it works more with Orton at the helm.

Certainly we have concerns about the Bears' offensive line, but we like the scenario for them here, especially if O'Sullivan doesn't make some bis plays. The Niners may have nowhere else to turn right now, and they have lost seven straight road games in the pre-season. Let's take Chicago, the three-point favorite in the NFL football betting odds.

Why Sports Betting is so much fun?

Betting Sports

The most popular sports to bet on are NFL and college football along with NBA and NCAA basketball. There are multiple betting opportunities within those sports, beginning with the basic wager on a game’s outcome (also called betting the side). College Football Point spreads are used in both football and basketball in an attempt to even the attractiveness of each team in a match-up. ( See our article detailing how and why point spreads are made)

But you could also simply bet on the money line, or straight-up winner of the game. Oddsmakers use the money line so that more money must be risked on the favorite or expected winner and less money on the underdog to balance the action on both sides. While money line gambling is an attractive option for football and basketball bettors who only care about picking a winner, it is the primary option for those bettors who enjoy wagering on MLB baseball and individual sports like boxing, tennis, golf and racing events such as NASCAR. ( More details on playing the Money Line)

Points (or Runs) Scored

Another bet across all major team sports including football, basketball, baseball, and hockey involves wagering on the amount of scoring in a game, called an Over/Under total. For example, the Over/Under total on Super Bowl XXXIX was 48, which means a bettor could wager whether there would be more or less than 48 points scored by both teams combined in the game.

The final score of Super Bowl XXXIX was 24-21; the scoring of both teams added up to 45, which means the game went Under . So Under bettors won, and Over bettors lost.

Future Bets

Sports gambling doesn’t end there. Betting sides and totals are the most common wagers available everywhere, but many sportsbooks also offer future bets on big upcoming events like who will win next year’s Super Bowl and what movie will win Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

The main advantage of futures is that you can get appealing odds by betting far in advance. For example, with NFL futures you often can get much higher odds on a team by betting before the season even starts. A NFL future bet on a team to win the Super Bowl odds might be 20/1 in the preseason; but by midseason, their odds might decrease to 10/1 if they turn out to be legitimate championship contenders.

Proposition Bets (or Prop Bets)

Proposition bets , also known as prop bets, focus upon the more exotic aspects of a game and are generally reserved for events that are widely televised. Prop bets are extremely popular when it comes to wagering on the Super Bowl in Las Vegas. The Imperial Palace Casino’s sportsbook is well-known for the enormous number of prop bets offered. For example, you can bet on:

Types of Bets

Straight Bet

Involves one individual wager, whether it be on your team to cover the point spread, to win the game straight-up on the money line, or to go over/under the total.

Sports Betting Parlays

A parlay is a single bet that links together two or more individual wagers and is dependent on all of those wagers winning together. The benefit of the parlay bet is much better odds than placing each individual bet separately since the difficulty of hitting it is much higher.

Standard payoffs on a two-team parlay are 13/5; while a three-teamer pays 6/1; and a four-teamer 10/1.

Parlay cards are also fairly common in sportsbooks and popular with bettors, as they are released early in the week with set odds that do not change in return for a slightly lower payoff.

Round Robin Betting

Adventurous bettors who enjoy betting parlays sometimes put together a series of parlays called a Round Robin . A three-team Round Robin consists of one three-team parlay and three two-team parlays. For example, Joe likes teams A,B,C – with a Round Robin he has a three-teamer with ABC, and two-teamers with AB, AC, and BC.

Betting Teasers

Similar to a parlay, a teaser bet is a single bet that links together two or more individual wagers, but is different in that the point spread is adjusted to your advantage on each individual wager. In exchange for the points, you get less of a return on your bet compared to a parlay. For example, a 6-point teaser would move the line on a 7-point favorite from -7 to -1, meaning the team would have to cover 6 less points. Each of the individual wagers must win or the bet is a loss.

These are the main types of sports bets available today. But as sports betting continues to grow, sportsbooks will continue to develop new and creative ways to bet. We’ll continue to track these changes to the sports gambling landscape, so check back often and we’ll tell you all about it!
